The story
The track opens low, almost imperceptibly, with a sub-bass drone settling under 60Hz before anything else moves. A heartbeat pulse ticks somewhere behind it, distant, in no hurry. The rebab enters bowed and plaintive, tracing a valley-contour pentatonic line that will return, altered, three or four times before the track ends. Night rain sits far back in the stereo field, barely there, more texture than sound.
Around the second minute the half-time kick-snare arrives, soft-attack, no click in it at all, just weight landing on the two and the reverb tail swallowing it whole. Hammered dulcimer shimmers in short runs over the rebab's theme, and the fretless bass slides underneath with that mwah glide, always circling back to the root. Chord stabs punch through with long delay trails that never fully decay before the next one lands.
The formant vox synth comes in as an aaah shape, wordless, breathing with the sidechain against the pads, thickening the mid-register as the didgeridoo overtone drone widens the low end further. Sonar pings mark time high and clean against all that low pressure. Tuned ethnic toms roll through once, briefly, before dropping back out, and a distant bell tolls somewhere in the reverb tail like a marker passed on a long walk.
By the last stretch the rebab theme returns fuller, doubled by dulcimer, the sub-bass wobble deepening under it in slow meditative sweeps. Everything that entered stays a little longer than expected, layering rather than replacing, until the track thins back down to bass and bowed string alone, closing where it started, unresolved, still walking.
