The story
Night Freight runs at 96 BPM in D minor, built around a freight train moving through darkness, the clatter of rail joints becoming the drum motor, a hard physical pulse of steel on steel driving the entire track forward. The hum of the electric locomotive slowly morphs into a distorted e-bow guitar that sings like an endless, inhuman voice, its pitch settling gradually into the piece's root note.
Brake screech bends and resolves into a bowed cello line, a harsh mechanical sound reshaped into a genuine melodic figure that carries real warmth against the colder electronic textures around it. The first climax brings the guitar-voice and the rail-joint drums together at full force, the train at its loudest and most physically present, cello sustaining underneath the full weight.
From there a long, stripped-down valley follows, only the bare rail rhythm audible in the dark, the locomotive reduced to its most minimal pulse. The second theme enters on cello from that emptiness, building toward a second climax higher and wider than the first, the guitar-voice wailing over pounding steel through to the extended close, the rails clattering underneath every phrase.
