The story

The piece opens on a single felt piano line, rubato and unhurried, each phrase bending slightly off the beat as if remembering something rather than announcing it. Mellotron choir rises beneath it in slow, breathy chords, giving the low end a chapel-like weight without ever turning loud. At 55 BPM there is room between notes, and that room is where the track actually lives.

A descending lament motif returns across the piece, but never in the same shape twice: lydian-tinged one pass, flattened and heavier the next, as if the same sentence is being said with a different regret each time. A restrained cello counter-melody threads underneath, close-mic'd and slightly dry, answering the piano rather than doubling it. Tibetan bells mark the turns between sections instead of a drum kit.

Sub-bass sits as a gentle pad rather than a pulse, felt more than heard, while a distant foghorn hum drifts in and out of the stereo field like weather passing outside a window. The rain stick appears only at transitions, a soft wash that dissolves one chapter into the next. Nothing resolves cleanly by the end; the two-chord dorian vamp just gets quieter until it isn't there.

For a slow train window, a late walk home in fog, working through old photographs, or the last hour before sleep.
