The story
The track opens low and stays low, a sub-bass current sitting under 60Hz that never fully lets go. It reads less like a bassline and more like air pressure changing in a stone room. Above it, a detuned pad drones in F Phrygian, thin and cold, while the first ceremonial pulse arrives like a footstep marking distance rather than tempo.
The contrabassoon enters as the true voice of the piece, a sub-low growl that phrases like breath rather than melody. It bends and sags between notes, answered by the baritone guitar's own low snarl, the two instruments circling the same narrow range without ever brightening. Tape saturation rounds every edge, so nothing here ever turns sharp or metallic.
Midway, sparse dissonant clusters rise out of the drone bed, brief clashes that resolve into rumble and silence, like distant thunder rolling over unseen hills. The stereo field widens here, reverb tails stretching long enough that each phrase seems to arrive from somewhere behind the last one. The ceremonial pulse never speeds up, only presses harder.
By the final minute the two lead instruments trade shorter, more insistent phrases against the sustained sub pressure, building toward the closest thing this piece has to a peak, still muted, still dark. It settles without resolving, the drone and sub-bass fading last, like headlights receding down an empty road into full black.
