The story

Hollow Tape Drift is built around a warbling tape ambient pad that never sits still, its pitch wandering slightly under constant analog degradation. At 67 BPM in F# minor, there is no clear pulse to hold onto, just the dominant sub-bass at 30-60Hz pressing underneath a wash of saturated, slowly detuning texture. The wandering pitch never settles into a fixed key center, keeping the whole bed unstable and analog.

A felt-muted piano enters intermittently, close-miked and dry against the reverberant surroundings, each note swallowed almost as soon as it sounds. Sparse detuned pad swells rise and fall around it while a distant, indistinct machine hum sits low in the mix, suggesting a room that is technically occupied but functionally empty. Nothing in the arrangement pushes toward resolution; the emptiness itself is the point of the piece.

Toward the end the hollow room-tone widens, reverb tails stretch further, and the tape warble grows more pronounced, as if the recording itself were degrading in real time. The synth lead carries the last melodic gesture before the track settles back into hum and hiss, tempo unchanged throughout. The degradation feels intentional rather than accidental, a slow fade built into the track's design.

For 3am insomnia, laundromat waits, empty apartment evenings, or background while journaling something you cannot quite name.
